Striz and DoJo (Live)
Debut live performance by Striz and DoJo, incorporating original compositions, DJed elements, electric strings and live improvisation.
One of the windy city’s most versatile DJs, Striz has developed a reputation for funking up any environment with his unique blend of downtempo, hip hop, broken beat, and house. Mixing broken polyrhythms, live instrumentation and a heavy dose of funk, his genre-defying DJ sets showcase the organic side of electronic music. Starting out in 1996, Striz developed his crowd rocking abilities at college house parties playing golden age hip hop. After moving back to sweet home Chicago in 2000, he co-founded illmeasures, a collective of DJs, producers, and designers that have been keeping the local underground scene alive through club nights and legendary large-scale loft and warehouse parties. Living in Madrid and his three-year employment at Groove Distribution (a jazzy underground record importer) opened his ears to new styles of electronic music from around the world and expanded his music collection to encompass a multitude of tempos and moods. He is currently a partner at The Freakeasy, a series of burner-oriented gatherings that have become the hottest ticket in town over their unprecedented 10 year run.
Striz has been chosen to perform alongside numerous international talents including Tricky, Jazzanova, DJ Krush, Nicolas Jaar, Jamie XX, Four Tet, Amon Tobin, Bonobo, James Murphy, DJ Food, Metro Area, Nickodemus, The Herbaliser, Quantic, and many others of myriad disciplines. He and fellow illmeasures founder Justin Reed were recently asked to warm up the historic Kennedy Center in Washington DC in May for a once in a lifetime show featuring Thievery Corporation performing live with a 22 piece orchestra.
Born in California but raised in the Pacific Northwest, DoJo (Dominic Johnson) grew up in a small town surrounded by folk music, hippies, and trees. Last month Johnson completed his third season as a member of the music department at Comedy Central’s Drunk History. The dizzyingly diverse career path that lead to accompanying televised inebriation began back in the 90’s, when he toured domestically and in Europe playing viola for an indie rock band, The Rachel’s. Subsequently, Mr. Johnson was the executive director and principal violist of the New Millennium Orchestra of Chicago, an ensemble he co-founded in 2005. A flourishing freelance career has included appearances with artists like Brian Wilson, Stevie Wonder, Belle and Sebastian, and Reggie Watts. Dominic has also arranged for and performed with Dj Spooky, eighth blackbird, Michael Kang of The String Cheese Incident, and rapper Lupe Fiasco. As DoJo, he has DJ’ed and played live electric strings for more than a decade, collaborating with artists like Rena Jones, the Flashbulb, Searchl1te, and the Abominable Twitch, and performing for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Mercury Soul and POST events, MusicNOW receptions, and underground dance parties.
