Metro Presents:The Twilight Sad
From their unassuming origins as a group of school friends drawn together by a shared passion for music to the global touring force they have quietly become, The Twilight Sad’s ascent has been forged the old way with grit, graft and exceptional studio albums. The Kilsyth group – based around the core duo of James Graham and Andy MacFarlane – seemed to emerge fully formed with their blindsiding 2007 debut, Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters, but there has been an undeniable evolution throughout the critically acclaimed body of work they have since produced.
“Within seconds of hitting play on track one, it’s obvious that The Twilight Sad are changing things up on It Won/t Be Like This All The Time, the fifth studio album from the long-running Scottish post-punk band. Louder and more direct than ever, the initial hard-hitting and pulsating synths of “[10 Good Reasons for Modern Drugs]” are as in your face as anything lead singer James Graham & co. have released prior.” —Paste Magazine
“The Twilight Sad’s greatest weapon is intensity. Ever since debut ‘Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters’, the Scots have amassed a catalogue of bleak but defiant hammer-blows, all punctuated by James Graham’s impassioned vocals, delivered in an unashamedly out-there accent from north of the border. This continues in earnest on new album It Won/t Be Like This All The Time. Unlike the swirling, guitar-led crash of most of the band’s catalogue, their fifth album is anchored by thudding, motorik beats that create a dancier base on which James exorcises his deepest demons, and it’s an even more intense form of communication.” —DIY Magazine
and Kathryn Joseph:
Prodigiously talented and criminally underrated; Kathryn is one of Scotland’s best-kept secrets. Her voice possesses theother-worldly quality comparable to Ms Newsom and Björk; but she is by no means of an ilk. Better compared with Anthony Heggarty; she is an artist in every way; unique and soulful, and at the core a beautiful unnerving truth.
