Ex Okays:

New-teenaged optimism fueled the formation of Ex Okays, with wisened persistent vigor that keeps them going today. The resulting sound from their first EP, Friends, landed somewhere in the spaceage cradle of power pop and lo-fi gar(b)age’s new baby. Jovial showgoers would agree that Ex Okays found their footing in Chicago’s DIY scene. Aidan, Dominic, Donovan and Johnny composed the lineup for Friends, but they figured five and a fuller sound is company: Elias came in. The latter meant homeboundness and in turn, creative flexibility with shows and new songs stacking up. While the efforts from 2018 and before were entirely self-produced, 2019’s had some help from Dalton Allison and Treehouse Records’ Barrett Guzaldo with mixing and mastering, respectively. This signaled a departure from echoed-out pop into bright power-prog notions that would shape things to come. Ex Okays released a more refined yet frantic collection of songs with their sophomore EP Good/Old Days. Teenagers no more, the optimism remains, shining through from the darkest basements to the brightest stages.

Tosser:

Tosser is a 4-piece rock band from Washington DC. Born as a bedroom recording endeavor of guitarist/vocalist Eric Zidar, the project released a self titled EP in 2017 followed by another EP “Lures” in 2018. Their debut album, “Total Restraint” will be released independently in February 2020. Recorded at the Washington DC studio “Lurch”, the band’s newest idiosyncratic effort shifts from melodic shoegaze to angular noise pop across its eleven tracks. Now joined by bassist Ryan Plummer, guitarist Victor Arce (Victor Archie) and Zeeshan Shad (The Sea Life) on drums, the band has evolved their songwriting in a heavier and more frenetic direction while still preserving the airy melodies heard on the past releases. Lyrically the songs are delivered as an introspective anecdote stocked with anxiety and lethargy. Chasing a balance between realism and wishful thinking, Zidar often opts out for the latter.

Arthhur:

Arthhur is an art rock group based out of Chicago featuring Mike Fox (guitar/vox), Matt Ciani (drums/vox) and Luke Dahlgren (bass/vox); they play rhythmic, danceable music inspired by the music communities of the late 70s and early 80s, a time of intense collaboration with visual art and poetry. This material touches upon dance punk, no wave, disco, electronica, post-punk and in earlier iterations folk and classical. What ties these different sounds together is an ear for propulsive rhythm, an unapologetic leftist lyrical content, and a belief in the restorative nature of the party. Their most recent record, 2018’s Lost in the Walled City, centers around these ideas, featuring four-on-the-floor disco slow burns and spasmic dance punk that addresses the anxieties of modern life. Arthhur says: let the rhythm renew you.
