CHIRP Radio’s 10th Anniversary +
Smashed Plastic’s 1st Anniversary
Smashed Plastic set out on a mission to bring back vinyl record pressing to Chicago, after 30+ years of absence. After assembling a brand new vinyl pressing plant, Smashed Plastic has been busy pressing over 40,000 local records for Chicago artists & labels. They are excited to celebrate what they have accomplished and what lies in the next year ahead. Come celebrate their first anniversary with the team and join the Smashed Plastic DJs as the spin some of their favorite pressings of the year!
In 2020, CHIRP Radio is celebrating its tenth year as Chicago’s source for great independent music curated by passionate, knowledgeable DJs. CHIRP launched online at chirpradio.org on January 17, 2010, and has been live and local ever since. Along the way, the organization helped pass a federal law, the Local Community Radio Act, that allowed more than 750 new stations across the country to get terrestrial broadcast licenses. CHIRP hit the broadcast airwaves in October 2017 (so we may have another tenth anniversary celebration in 2027!). Today, you can enjoy CHIRP on the air on the North Side of Chicago at 107.1FM, via mobile app for iOS or Android, on your Smart Speaker (just say, “play CHIRP Radio”), and online worldwide at chirpradio.org.
Super Knova is a Chicago-based transgender artist who creates Queer Pop, a guitar-based sound that incorporates electronic drums, driving synths, and virtuosic solos. They write about identity, sex, queerness and the struggle of being your authentic self.
The Dyes are a rock’n’roll roots trio hailing from Chicago, IL. By infusing ’60s garage rock with infectious ’50s rockabilly, they dish out a melodic, yet raw sound. Front woman Lisa Louise croons, hiccups, and growls her way through heartfelt originals & eclectic covers alike; bassist Jill thumps a sparkle Danelectro to & fro, keeping up the train’s rhythm & complementing every twang of guitar; all the while Charlie is the madman behind the wheel, driving the sound forward at an alarmingly fast (and sweaty) pace. Extracting from influences such as Hank Williams, The Cramps, Wanda Jackson, and The Flat Duo Jets, this trio mixes up a punchy cocktail sure to please the palate of a wide spectrum of music lovers. They finish off their rock’n’roll mix with hints of punk, surf, blues, and country – and a touch of femme fatale!
Unforeseen may be the prevailing manner in which this requiem springs forth from within such a vigorous and weathered pelt. The beginning of Space Gators was a near-instantaneous effort between Ryan Deffet and Adam Karstens to entertain a friend’s basement party with less than a week to prepare. On that night Space Gators, as dubbed by then harmonica player Evan Kelley, planted their sprouts in a patch of starry soil.
